Gnosall Village Green

The field next to Gnosall Health Centre was granted Village Green status in 2011.  This came as a result of a successful campaign by local residents against affordable housing being built on the site.  Subsequently the land was gifted to the Parish Council by owners, Taylor Wimpey, in 2013.  Gnosall Parish Council manages this site in accordance with Village Green guidelines and for the benefit of the whole community.  In recent years there have been funfairs at the beginning of the school summer holidays held on the Village Green.

Gnosall’s fabulous Best Kept Village Team (BKV) has certainly done a great deal to enhance the Village Green in recent years. In 2018 they created a Wildflower meadow at the top part of the Green, adjacent to the Surgery. You can read all about it in the article which appeared in the GMK of October 2018  It wasn’t an easy task, as a hot dry summer favoured weeds more than wildflowers. This will be an annual challenge and taking care of a “wild” space is only marginally less trouble than taking care of a manicured garden! But the flowers make a bright and pleasant focal point for bees and parishioners alike.

BKV has focussed on tree planting to help combat climate change (see this article from GMK Autumn 2020). In 2020/21 BKV planted 25 trees around the perimeter, sponsored by village businesses. Each sponsored tree has a plaque naming the variety and the name of the sponsor. There are White Beam, Silver Birch, Hawthorn, Crab Apple and Bird Cherry. In 2022 the BKV team planted approximately 60 trees, again all sponsored by local people including a Platinum Jubilee tree planted by Gnosall’s WI
